Last American Hero on TV – July 2nd, 3rd and 13th
Just a quick note because I saw this advertised today: Last American Hero is on MoviesTV July2nd, 3rd and 13th. MoviesTV is an over the air broadcast station in most cities – look up your neighborhood here.
If you have never seen this movie, it just may be the best NASCAR film they will ever make. Based on an article that Pulitzer prize winning (and white linen suit wearing) author Tom Wolfe wrote about Junior Johnson back at the dawn of new journalism, it stars Jeff Bridges as a poor southern boy who can drive the wheels off a stock car. It was made back in 1973 with all the grit, moonshine and tobacco you expect in 1970s NASCAR.If you are interested the original article is in the classic book The Kandy-Kolor Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby which if you haven’t read will really blow your skirt up and flip your wig, man. My copy was autographed by George Barris himself (not my copy pictured)
This movie, backed with Greased Lightning, the Wendel Scott story featuring Richard Pryor as the first successful black stock car racer would be just about perfect. Besides a solid performance by Pryor, this movie also has a young and hot Pam Grier, plus the ugly Bridges, Beau.
